What has to happen to keep the US in the World Cup? I found this handy summary.
Sheesh.

Seems like "Italy defeats the Czech Republic" is the most likely (and it hardly is). "United States beats Ghana by at least four goals"? Would be interesting. :-)
I dunno, a margin of four goals might mean a pretty dull game...I think I prefer "The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Italians do in their loss." Also the last scenario, in which the US has to win a drawing of lots. It gets pretty baroque.
The more interesting it gets, the better (and top teams do hardly a good match make - yesterday's "top match" Argentina vs Netherlands was unspeakably boring). The very last scenario - in that I agree - would be interesting because of its complexity alone. It is, however, still quite unlikely. :-) In a couple of hours, we'll all be smarter.
