grumble

Somehow yesterday I was able to get things done. I don't know if it hadn't hit me yet, or what, but today I'm so drained that I can't work at all. A few pages of translation (Paul Zanker on the building programs of the Roman emperors--yowza) and that's it so far. How about you? Does your brain still work, or have you caved in to despair? I'm waiting for my second wind of Just Outrage and Grim Resolve to come in. I'll let you know when it does.

Aye aye aye. It didn't really hit me at first, so I was able to crack bad jokes about the election and it didn't seem like such a big deal. Late yesterday afternoon, however, I realized just how catastrophic this result was when my father, a lifelong Republican, told me he had voted for Kerry because he fears the rightward lurch the Supreme Court may take when/if Bush has the opportunity to appoint new justices.

Perhaps I'm taking the election results a little too personally, but one of the ways Bush won the election was by pandering to the right on gay issues. I am very scared by the prospect that my friends and I are entering a new era where it will be OK to use us and our lives and our relationships for crass political gain. We're politically expendable, and no one at the Federal level will act as a brake on attempts by the extreme right to use gays as political fodder. The State of California and the City and County of San Francisco can only protect me so much; otherwise, it's up to John Paul Stevens and Sandra Day O'Connor staying healthy enough to remain on the Supreme Court. Much as I respect those justices and their moderate colleagues, they are not a particularly reassuring line of defense.

This and worries about RvW are the two things that make me quake. All I can say is those of us who've been slipping into complacency in the ten years since college had better get BUSY.
