On Thursday night a fire destroyed a portion of the Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek in Weimar. The director estimates a loss of around 30,000 books and manuscripts dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. Approximately 50,000 additional objects were saved, but the majority are now badly water-damaged.
Here's the story at the FAZ, which includes a number of pictures of the fire, and of the rococo library beforehand.
[Update: see ionarts' translation of Le Monde's coverage; I notice some discrepancies among the various reports concerning the numbers of books destroyed, but whatever the actual numbers this is a major loss.]
